Breaking the fast with breakfast

Why eat breakfast? 

Breakfast means “breaking the fast” – the first meal you eat after the overnight fast of 8 to 12 hours since your last meal. By morning, your body needs energy.

People who eat breakfast 

  • Feel better in the mornings
  • Learn more and can think more clearly
  • Are more alert
  • Are less moody and irritable
  • Get a boost of nourishing calcium, iron, B vitamins and fibre
  • Feel less hungry by morning tea or lunchtime
  • Control their weight more easily

Find a breakfast to suit you

At home

  • Smoothie - use any fruit blended with milk, yoghurt and a spoonful of honey
  • English muffin or grainy toast topped with bit of Vegemite and cheese or avocado
  • Eggs or an omelette, any way you like them!
  • Glass of milk (add some Milo®) and raisin toast or a crumpet
  • A herbie gerbie (a Yhunger toasted sandwich or jaffle) or baked bean and egg bread cup
  • Sliced banana and honey on a bread roll or toast
  • Cereal with milk
  • Rice porridge (congee or ta pa kaw)

No time to eat in the mornings?

Save some time and get your breakfast ready the night before or you can bolt out the door with a sandwich, fresh fruit or any of the below:

  • Toast or crumpets with peanut butter, honey, jam or Vegemite
  • A piece of fruit or tinned fruit pot
  • A tub or pouch of yoghurt
  • Up and Go® or popper of milk
  • Muesli bar with nuts and/or dried fruit and a glass of fruit juice

Smart fast food choices to start the day:

  • Smashed avocado on toast
  • Raisin bread with ricotta
  • Egg sandwich
  • Chicken salad wrap
  • Cheese roll or jaffle
  • Yoghurt cup topped with granola

  • Manoosh and a yoghurt drink
  • Fresh fruit salad
  • A humble banana or simple apple
