Congratulations to Sydney Local Health District staff who recently graduated with new qualifications through our staff education and training service, Sydney Education.

A Sydney Education ceremony celebrated 24 students who graduated with qualifications, including the Graduate Certificate in Health Research, Certificate III in Health Administration, Certificate IV in Business, and Diploma of Mental Health.

Vaughan Phillips joined our District three years ago as part of the COVID-19 support team. With a background in sales and hospitality, Vaughan saw the courses offered to staff as an opportunity for a career change.

“It was fantastic to learn that the District offers opportunities for career progression through tailored training for their staff,” he said.

Now working as an Executive Assistant for the District Executive Team, Vaughan credits the support of his manager and the team at Sydney Education for giving him the confidence to embark on the Certificate IV in Business program.

"The educators and facilitators were incredibly supportive. The course was designed around real projects and work environments, making it relevant to my role and career goals," Vaughan said.

Mose Kim, another graduate, joined Sydney Local Health District two years ago as an Administration Officer at RPA Women and Babies after a few years in the education industry. Mose’s manager suggested she enrol in the Certificate III in Health Administration to gain additional knowledge about healthcare and medical terminology used regularly on their ward.

"Part of my job is taking minutes and working on significant documentation, so it was important for me to understand the technical language used in the health sector. Everything makes sense now,” she said.

“It helped me have more compassion for our patients and their families as I now understand their diagnoses and health journeys in more depth. It empowered me to support them better.”

“Our staff are encouraged to be lifelong learners and to support a culture of learning within their departments and services,” Lesley said.

“We also focus on creating programs that inspire staff and help them achieve their career goals," she said.

Sydney Education offers a wide range of learning opportunities for staff each year. This includes over 200 different courses and programs regularly delivered for both clinical and non-clinical staff.
