The District’s Finance team has named staff member Angela Sun, as the recipient of the 2024-25 Sami Azmol Scholarship.

"It’s an incredible honour to receive the Sami Azmol Scholarship,” said Angela.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Sydney Local Health District’s Chief Executive, Deb Willcox, District Finance, and the committee for this opportunity.

“Both Sami and I graduated from Macquarie University, and I feel deeply honoured to follow in his footsteps for commitment to excellence," she said.

The scholarship, established in memory of Sami Azmol—a beloved and influential member of the RPA Finance team who passed away suddenly in 2020—provides up to $10,000 for Sydney Local Health District staff to advance their qualifications in accounting or finance-related disciplines.

Sami’s father, Golam Azmol, and brother, Rafi Azmol, joined the Finance Team to celebrate Sami’s birthday and the scholarship presentation on Thursday, 21 November. Golam spoke to the team about Sami’s love for his workplace.

"It is great to be with you all on this day, celebrating Sami’s birthday with his family - that’s how he referred to all of you."

The timing of the announcement held special significance for Angela.

“Today is particularly meaningful as it marks Sami’s birthday and also my two-year anniversary with Sydney Local Health District. This coincidence makes receiving the award even more personal and significant."

Angela plans to use the scholarship to pursue her Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) certification. She acknowledged the support she has received from her team throughout her career.

"I am grateful to my colleagues and everyone who has supported me to reach this milestone,’ she said.

The Sami Azmol Scholarship not only enables recipients to develop their skills but also preserves the values Sami embodied. Known for his collaborative nature and ability to simplify complex financial concepts for anyone who needed help, Sami left a lasting impact on his colleagues.

Reflecting on Sami’s legacy, the District’s Director of Partnerships, John O’Grady, highlighted the significance of the scholarship.

"The Sami Azmol Scholarship not only honours the remarkable contributions Sami made to our District but also inspires our staff to strive for excellence, just as he did,” John said.

“Angela’s dedication and ambition are a testament to the values this scholarship seeks to inspire."
