Distinguished surgeon named Honorary Consultant Emeritus. 

Colorectal surgeon Professor Pierre Chapuis has been named an Honorary Consultant Emeritus at Concord Hospital.  

Professor Chapuis’ appointment follows his recent retirement from Concord after a distinguished career providing exemplary service to the hospital and its patients for more than 40 years. 

Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive Dr Teresa Anderson AM said the eminent surgeon and former Co-Chair of the Concord Insitute of Academic Surgery had made significant contributions across the clinical, teaching, administrative and research work of the hospital. 

“I congratulate Pierre on this appointment and his retirement and thank him for his decades of service to Concord Hospital and our District,” Dr Anderson said.  

Professor Chapuis has been a supportive and influential supervisor to countless PhD students, has led the surgical masters program for many years and been the mentor for many academic surgeons.   

He served as a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of Surgery at the University of Sydney, before his promotion in 2014 to Professor of Surgery and Director of Postgraduate Surgical Education.  

Associate Professor Sarah Aitken, Co-Chair of the Concord Institute of Academic Surgery, said Professor Chapuis’ mentoring played a pivotal role in her own career as a surgeon. 

“Pierre encouraged my interest in surgery when I was a young female medical student, unwavering in his belief that I would make an excellent surgeon,” she said. 

“He hasn’t ceased in his encouragement since then.” 

One of Professor Chapuis’ greatest achievements has been his instrumental role in establishing and maintaining the world's largest single-unit colorectal cancer database – the Colorectal Cancer Health Outcomes & Values Research Project. 

Associate Professor Aitken said the influence of his work on the database should not be underestimated. 

“The work that came from that has shaped the staging and understanding of colorectal surgery internationally,” she said. 

Professor Chapuis has also helped advance the profession as an editor on the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery for decades and has been a longtime member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Anatomy and Pathology examination committee.  

In 2020 he was named a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia for services to medical education and colorectal surgery. In 2021 he was made Professor Emeritus at the University of Sydney.  

Professor Chapuis’ appointment as Honorary Consultant Emeritus will allow him to continue to be of service in his roles supporting the ongoing care of the colorectal cancer database, the Concord Institute of Academic Surgery and the hospital’s Higher Degree by Research candidates.
