Breast Surgery Research

Research in our department looks to the future of surgical operations by incorporating alternative surgical techniques, SPY Fluorescence Angiography, negative-pressure wound therapy and scout-localisation, all with an eye to improving patient-related outcomes.

Our department is exploring the effectiveness of multimodal early supportive care to maximise functioning and wellbeing during treatment and prior to surgery. The multimodal supportive care program is currently recruiting patients, and comprises of holistic nursing assessment, education (lifestyle, nutrition, lymphoedema risk, pre-surgery), personalised exercise, and screening using patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) for symptoms and early intervention.

Further investigation is being undertaken by our department into the utility of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in early breast cancer management, sensation-preserving breast reconstruction, effectiveness of Kaiser scoring in MRI, targeted axillary dissection practices (a nation-wide registry) and video-assisted informed consent.
