The Sunken Garden was constructed in 1927 by Italian stonemasons. It is located to the West of the house, fed by a rivulet (now dry) and is one of several gardens established by Dame Eadith during her residence at Yaralla House. It was thought to be designed by Dame Eadith’s head gardener and incorporates some of the then current landscape features, such as the use of stone as pavers and dry rock garden walls. The garden features include a central pond, ‘lovers knot’ and stone seats. The same stonemasons built the grotto and the Italianate terrace.

Imagine living about 130 years ago on the beautiful Yaralla Estate. You would always be able to go for a swim in the huge pool, or play on the tennis courts – or even just walk through the Lavender Walk, then go down to the Sunken Garden. It would be wonderful to see the children’s parties that Dame Eadith Walker held.
