JMOs impressed with Concord Hospital Redevelopment progress.

Two of Sydney Local Health District's junior doctors joined the Concord Hospital Redevelopment project team for the first site tour in 2021, as construction progresses on the new Clinical Services Building.

Fangzhi Jia and Gajanth Sivapalan are junior medical officers, or JMOs, and are undertaking their medical internships at Concord.

They've witnessed the $341 million redevelopment project since the main works began in late 2019 to construct the eight-storey building that's set to transform healthcare in the inner west.

The new Clinical Services Building will have more than 200 inpatient beds.

The National Centre for Veterans' Healthcare, which provides Australia's first comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to care for veterans' physical and mental health related illnesses, will relocate to the building when it opens.

The building will also house a comprehensive cancer centre and an aged health centre.

"I am keen to see what the redevelopment involves for the hospital," Fangzhi Jia, who is currently working in the hospital's cardiology department, said.

"I could see the footprint getting bigger and bigger over the past year and it is great. Although I walk around the area frequently, I had little idea what the inside would be like," he said.

His colleague, Gajanth Sivapalan said he was "most impressed by the space, functional layout and incorporation of natural light into the design. I was impressed by the scale, size and interior design.

"I was not anticipating the level of consideration and attention to detail that had been put into making the redevelopment both an aesthetic and functional working space.

"I'm coming to the end of my internship after working for one year as a JMO. Concord Hospital has been a fantastic place to learn the ropes and I expect the redevelopment will only improve the experiences of interns in the future," he said.

Both are keen to for the building to open and to have the opportunity to work there.

Completion of the new building is expected in late 2021, with the construction of a new $32.4 million multistorey car park to then begin.
