Concord fast tracks new building for COVID patients.

Sydney Local Health District is stepping up the fight against COVID-19, fast tracking Concord Hospital's $341.2 million redevelopment project to provide dedicated care for patients with COVID-19.

Wards in the hospital's new clinical services building will initially open exclusively for COVID-19 patients to meet the increase in case numbers.

"Along with Royal Prince Alfred and Canterbury hospitals, Concord has seen increased COVID-19 activity since the start of the Delta outbreak, and as part of a carefully curated health plan to support both staff and patients, we have expanded our ICU and COVID ward capacity to meet this increase,'' Dr Teresa Anderson, the District's Chief Executive, said.

"Our staff and our services continue to be responsive and resilient, and it is fitting that the newest healthcare facility in NSW will serve the community by opening its doors to COVID-19 patients in their time of need.

"We are doing everything we can to make sure our staff have the facilities and support required to continue to provide the very best care for patients," Dr Anderson said.

Teams are preparing to transition Concord Hospital's current COVID-19 wards into the new building as soon as possible.

"Two-thirds of inpatient beds in the new building at Concord Hospital are in single rooms, providing more space to isolate and care for patients with COVID-19," Dr Anderson said.

"The modern design of the wards allows for optimal line of sight to patients and additional space for staff to have breaks and shower after their shifts."

Within the building, there is a three storey concourse link bridge connecting to the main hospital which will facilitate moving patients from current COVID-19 wards, the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.

Existing COVID-19 infection control measures, including personal protective equipment, physical distancing, hand hygiene and associated work practices, will still be in place across the entire hospital.

The District has been working with its partners, Health Infrastructure and building contractor Roberts Co to make the building available as part of its pandemic response.

Concord Hospital's new eight-storey clinical services building is part of the NSW Government's Stage 1 redevelopment project delivering a major expansion and upgrade of services. Works on the project began in 2017.

The comprehensive cancer centre, aged health care and rehabilitation services along with a dedicated veterans' health service scheduled to move in to the new building will continue to operate from the existing facilities while the COVID-19 response arrangements are in place.

Construction of a new $32.4 million multi-storey hospital car park is expected to begin next year after the relocations are complete.
