Health Minister Ryan Park and Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis have given the community a first look at how Canterbury's redevelopment will take shape.

The community has had its first glimpse of how the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment will take shape after the project’s master plan was launched by Health Minister Ryan Park and Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis.

Aspects of the project’s scope and images showing the location of new buildings were unveiled at the launch on Monday 3 February 2025.

The $350 million project is the biggest upgrade for the hospital in more than 26 years.

Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive Deb Willcox said the redevelopment reflected the District’s commitment to providing exceptional care.

“This significant investment allows us to build and design a hospital that recognises clinical innovation and importantly meets the needs of the proud and diverse community we serve,” Ms Willcox said.

Mr Park said the master plan launch was an important milestone in a momentous project.

“The release of the master plan for Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment marks a significant step forward in delivering new and enhanced healthcare services and facilities for Canterbury and surrounding communities,” he said. 

“This planning milestone paves the way for a vital health facility that will meet the needs of the growing community now and into the future.” 

Health services and facilities identified as priorities for the redevelopment include a new Intensive Care Unit, an expanded and enhanced Emergency Department, more surgical theatres and new purpose-built adult in-patient accommodation.

The project will also seek to make the best use of existing facilities at Canterbury, including the main hospital building and the Canterbury Health Centre.

Community consultation has been a key part of the redevelopment master planning and will continue to be throughout 2025 as the planning process continues.

Among these consultations will be pop-up information sessions in locations across Canterbury and surrounding suburbs as well as online community information sessions.

The Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment is being delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with Sydney Local Health District.
