Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week across the District
Events highlighted the importance of breastfeeding and community support

Sydney Local Health District marked World Breastfeeding Week (1–7 August) with community events at Canterbury Hospital and Lakemba Child and Family Health Clinic, celebrating this year’s theme: Prioritise Breastfeeding – Create Sustainable Support Systems.
At Canterbury, the Child and Family Health Nursing team hosted an event with interactive displays and contributions from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Lactation team, Tresillian, the Health Promotion Early Years Health team and the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA).
In Lakemba, families joined a relaxed morning tea with Child and Family Health Nurses, Lactation Consultants, Koorana Child & Family Services and ABA representatives, creating a culturally supportive space to connect and share.
“Breastfeeding is a powerful investment in the health of our children and our planet. When we create sustainable support systems – at home, in healthcare and in the community – we empower mothers to breastfeed for as long as they choose,” said Wendy Smith, Clinical Nurse Educator, Child and Family Health Nursing.
Throughout the District, families can access a range of breastfeeding supports, from telephone advice through the Child Health Information Link, to weekly face-to-face clinics and telehealth appointments. New Parent Groups and weekly Baby Play sessions at Lakemba also provide safe and welcoming spaces for parents to connect and gain confidence.
The week was also marked with displays across sites including Croydon, Forest Lodge and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where families could access information and resources. Staff education was also supported with a breastfeeding quiz and case study at Camperdown.
These initiatives highlight the ongoing commitment of Child and Family Health Nursing and partners to supporting breastfeeding and infant health across our communities.
