Australia Day Honours 2025
Concord’s A/Prof Gottlieb recognised for his exceptional contribution to medicine.

Clinical Associate Professor Thomas Gottlieb, Concord Hospital’s Head of Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2025 Australia Day Honours.
The honour was awarded for his “distinguished service to medicine as an infectious disease and microbiology specialist, author and researcher, and to professional organisations”.
Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive Deb Willcox AM and Concord Hospital acting General Manager Anthony Dombkins said the Australia Day honour was worthy recognition of the profound impact of A/Prof Gottlieb’s contribution to patient care and national and international health policy.
“Tom’s work has been at the forefront of the fight against antimicrobial resistance and helping us refine our care for our patients,” Ms Wilcox said.
“It’s wonderful to see his dedication and expertise honoured in this way.”
As a specialist, researcher and author, A/Prof Gottlieb has been heavily involved in the national and international policy response to antimicrobial resistance, identified by the World Health Organization as one of the biggest threats to modern medicine.
He has long been involved with the Australian Group for Antimicrobial Resistance (AGAR) and the Australian Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (ASTAG).
A/Prof Gottlieb has served on committees for the National Health and Medical Research Council and on the executives of the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases and the Australian Society for Antimicrobials. He is also a clinical senior lecturer at the University of Sydney.
In his time at Concord Hospital, A/Prof Gottlieb has held a series of key appointments since he first became a Staff Specialist in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in 1991. He has been Head, Department of Infectious Diseases since 2000, Head of Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology since 2014 and a member of the Medical Staff Council Executive since 2000.
Three other clinicians with past ties to Sydney Local Health District were also recognised in this year’s Australia Day Honours.
Dr Antheunis “Tom” Boogert, Professor Paul Glare and Dr James Markos were all appointed Members of the Order of Australia (AM) for, respectively obstetric medicine, palliative care, and respiratory health.
All four doctors began training in their specialty medical careers at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in the 1980s with both Dr Boogert and Professor Glare providing clinical services to the Hospital and NSW for many years while Dr Markos went on to work in Tasmania at the Launceston Hospital until his retirement in 2024. Professor Glare is currently holding the Chair of Pain Medicine at the University of Sydney based at Royal North Shore Hospital. Dr Boogert recently retired from RPA
“This recognition reflects their extraordinary commitment to improving the lives of others through healthcare,” said Ms Willcox. “On behalf of the District, I thank them for their exceptional service and warmly congratulate them on these well-deserved honours.”
