About this course
Teaching on the Run is a well-respected and widely delivered program across Australia that was developed by two academics from The University of Western Australia TELL Centre. Teaching on the Run aims to help participants increase their skills and confidence in teaching and supervising in the clinical setting. The facilitators at Sydney Education are licenced provides of this program.
This program is delivered in two parts – Teaching on the Run: Core Skills and Teaching on the Run: Supporting and Planning Learning.
Who should attend?
Teaching on the Run: Core Skills
Core Skills is designed to benefit clinical staff who provide bed side teaching and education to staff and students. All clinicians with an interest in furthering their teaching skills are encouraged to apply.
Teaching on the Run: Supporting and Planning Learning
Supporting and Planning Learning is designed to upskill clinical staff who are responsible for or aspiring to take a role in planning teaching programs for staff and students. In addition, they will be supporting learners who encounter challenges or setbacks. It is recommended that staff attend the core skills workshop before attending this offering.

Each offering is made up of three modules. They include:
Teaching on the Run: Core Skills
- Clinical Teaching provides a framework for teaching in the clinical environment
- Assessment Foundations discusses different types of assessment and how to determine competence of learners
- Skills Teaching focuses on the Four-step approach in teaching a clinical skill
Teaching on the Run: Supporting and Planning Learning
- Planning Learning focuses on creating learning and lesson plans
- Effective Group Teaching explores active learning strategies for small and large group teaching
- Supporting Learners identifies issues for learners who need extra support

The 2021 evaluation data indicates that 84 per cent of participants rated their self-perceived effectiveness as a clinical teacher/ supervisor as good or excellent. This contrasts with 53 per cent before the course commenced.
