About this course
Preceptorship is recognised as a vital component of providing support to nurses and midwives as they transition into a new work environment. Preceptorship includes the support and supervision of new nurses and midwives when they start in a clinical area.
This course supports participants to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to become a Sydney Local Health District preceptor.
Who should attend?
Registered nurses, registered midwives, clinical nurse educators and clinical midwifery educators in Sydney Local Health District.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Identify the roles, responsibilities and competencies required of a preceptor in Sydney Local Health District
- Describe the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be an effective preceptor
- Recognise how undergraduate and graduate nurses experience the transition process, and how to support, identify and manage preceptee concerns appropriately
- Apply strategies to aid socialisation and support new staff
- Discuss adult teaching principles used for effective preceptorship
- Practice effective communication skills including feedback and challenging situations.
