Survivorship Gym
Exercise has been shown to improve some of the side effects of cancer treatment. Our accredited exercise physiologists are allied health professionals and have a special interest and experience in exercise for people living with cancer.
Exercise physiology can help you find ways to:
- Increase your energy levels and reduce fatigue
- Improve your health and wellbeing
- Improve your strength and rebuild your muscle
- Improve your lung function
- Improve your balance and reduce the risk of falls
- Improve the strength of your bones and function of your joints
- Reduce anxiety and depression
- Improve your heart function and reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and other types of cancer
- Improve your quality of life
Access to Exercise Physiology and the Survivorship Gym is available for all people who have received treatment at Concord Cancer Centre, but particularly for patients undergoing chemotherapy, who have completed chemotherapy for an early-stage cancer and patients with more advanced cancer.
What to expect
At your first appointment, your exercise physiologist will discuss your health status and do some simple physical assessments in order to individualise the exercise prescription to your specific needs. They will develop a personalised exercise program according to your type of cancer, treatment history, severity of any symptoms/side effects, as well as your general health history, physical abilities and personal preferences.
Small group exercise classes are also run at the Survivorship Gym. These provide guidance in a supportive environment. Sessions include aerobic, muscle strengthening and mobility exercises. Each program is individually tailored and limited to six people.
