Where do you work in Sydney Local Health District?

I work at Balmain Hospital in adult and geriatrics inpatient rehabilitation.

What do you do?

I am a speech pathologist. I help patients with communication and swallowing impairments, particularly those related to neurological health such as stroke and neurodegenerative conditions.

Why do you do what you do?

I enjoy helping patients and their families understand their diagnoses, optimise their function with therapy, and utilise their strengths to compensate for their deficits. I find it very satisfying to help patients and their families return to the activities that bring them joy and independence, whether that be enjoying a hot cup of tea, or having a meaningful conversation with a loved one.

What’s the best thing about your workplace?

Balmain Hospital is a friendly community where everyone belongs. You can’t walk through the hospital without seeing a smiling face or someone asking how you are. The connection between staff, regardless of discipline, is something that is very special about Balmain.

What’s the nicest thing a colleague has ever done for you?

At the end of a particularly difficult day, a colleague turned to me and said with genuine appreciation, “Thank you for all your help and hard work today.” Though the words were simple, their sincerity meant a great deal, especially during a time when I was quietly facing personal challenges. That moment of recognition reminded me how powerful kindness and appreciation can be.

What inspired you to join the People Matter Committee?

I was inspired to join the committee to help share the voices and perspectives of myself and my colleagues. By joining this committee, I saw an opportunity to ensure employee feedback is not only heard but also drives positive and lasting change.
