Our People Matter
Meet Riona

Where do you work in Sydney Local Health District?
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
What do you do?
I’m a Senior Staff Specialist in Renal Supportive Care and Supportive Care/ Palliative Medicine. My role involves caring for patients with complex needs, focusing on improving quality of life through holistic, compassionate care.
Why do you do what you do?
Supportive and palliative care is one of the kindest specialties in medicine, where love and care come first. It’s a privilege to walk alongside people during some of their most vulnerable moments.
What’s the best thing about your workplace?
The social connections and the genuinely kind people I get to work with every day.
What’s the nicest thing a colleague has ever done for you?
A colleague once advocated for me when I wasn’t being heard—that kind of support meant the world.
What inspired you to join the People Matter Committee?
I wanted to support young and emerging leaders and help amplify the voices that truly matter within our organisation—especially those that may not always feel heard. Being part of this committee is a way to contribute to a culture where everyone feels valued, seen, and empowered to make a difference.
