Meet Mark

Mark Shannon
SydneyConnect Image: Mark Shannon, Operations Manager, Cell and Molecular Therapies at RPA Hospital

Where do you work in Sydney Local Health District?

I work at RPA Hospital in a relatively small department called Cell & Molecular Therapies (or CMT).

We deploy advanced therapies that target a patient’s own immune cells or genes with exacting precision to deliver long-lasting, or at times curative, “one-dose-and-you’re-done” benefits. We also undertake and facilitate cell and gene therapy clinical trials.

What do you do?

As the department’s Operations Manager, I do everything I possibly can to ensure that my teammates have everything they need to do their work to the highest possible standard.

Why do you do what you do?

I have worked hard over the last 25 years to support both basic and translational research within large Australian medical research organisations. In that time, I’ve watched novel cell and gene therapies move beyond investigation into clinical application as advanced therapeutic products. Knowing that their deployment in a hospital setting requires highly complex interventions by multi-disciplinary teams, specialised facilities (like ours at RPA), complicated supply chains, and strict regulatory and practical governance arrangements, I’m glad to be of help to my team.

What’s the best thing about your workplace?

The best thing is the cell therapy program here at RPA Hospital and my department, CMT, of course. To me, our growth and success is a testament to our shared core values of collaboration, openness, respect, and empowerment.

What’s the nicest thing a colleague has ever done for you?

My father passed away last year suddenly and on my return from extended leave, I found chocolates and a card on my desk. The messages from my teammates inside the card were incredibly touching to read. I was really taken aback by them.

What inspired you to join the People Matter Committee?

I genuinely care about people and their experiences at work. I know I can make a strong contribution as a People Matter Committee member because of that.
