Our People Matter
Meet Jack

Where do you work in Sydney Local Health District?
Concord Hospital
What do you do?
I’m a physiotherapist. I currently work across the cardiology, vascular and acute aged health wards.
Why do you do what you do?
I used to be an elite pole vaulter. When choosing my degree after finishing high school, I tried to pick something that would be beneficial for my sporting career and also have longevity after I finished up with athletics. Through completion of the degree, I realised there was so much more than just sports physiotherapy and took a liking to working in a hospital. From there, I’ve rotated through a few roles within the District and found my professional home here at Concord Hospital.
What’s the best thing about your workplace?
I’ve heard many people describe Concord Hospital as a little community. I echo that sentiment and feel it on a daily basis. I also find it goes beyond each insular department. It’s so nice to be able to walk around the Hospital grounds and say hi to so many smiling faces that I’ve worked with over the years.
What’s the nicest thing a colleague has ever done for you?
About a year ago, my niece was unwell and spent a few weeks in a major hospital here in Sydney. My sister and her family live up in Newcastle, so she had to live in limbo at the hospital while her husband and other kids were still at home. I was spending many nights out at the hospital with them or taking days off. A few of the nurses from my home ward started cooking me meals so I could spend my time caring for my sister.
What inspired you to join the People Matter Committee?
I’ve found myself developing a passion for staff wellness and staff retention. I continue to be involved in a few social committees here at Concord and found the People Matter Committee to be a fabulous extension of that. It’s been great to advocate for change on behalf of the hospital staff and implement real-time solutions.
