Specialities & Services
Sydney Local Health District is made up of a range of hospitals and services including Royal Prince Alfred (RPA), Concord Repatriation General (Concord), Balmain, Canterbury and Sydney Dental Hospitals, Tresillian Family Care Centre, Community Health, Mental Health Services, Drug Health Services and RPA Virtual Hospital (Sydney District Nursing Services).
With these hospitals and services comes an exciting diversity of clinical specialities and a range of opportunities for nurses and midwives working across the district.
We employ around five thousand nurses and midwives including registered nurses/midwives, enrolled nurses, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse/midwife consultants, clinical nurse specialists and assistants in nursing. Below are some examples of our diverse nursing and midwifery specialties.
Midwifery services

Sydney Local Health District provides specialist maternity services across three of our hospitals – RPA, Canterbury and Concord. All sites focus on providing midwifery led continuity of care for the women and families in our area. Registered midwives work within midwifery led models of care such as midwifery group practice, maternity antenatal and postnatal services and in a team midwifery model at the Birth Centre at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Midwives have opportunities to work in the antenatal environment, birthing units and the maternity ward area, with both Canterbury Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital offering core and rotational positions in Maternity Services.
Sydney Local Health District provides high level specialist neonatal care for babies across NSW. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is a level 5 Neonatal Intensive Care and Canterbury Hospital has a level 3 Special Care Nursery. Neonatal Nursing is a specialised field of practice and NSW Health scholarships are available to support further study in this field.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are often thought of as taking place behind the scenes—in laboratories or academic institutions. However in reality, they are central to the care many of us receive each day. Without clinical trials, there would be no new treatments, no improved therapies, and no progress towards safer, more effective healthcare.
At the forefront of this work are clinical trials and research nurses. They form the vital link between scientific innovation and patient-centred care. With clinical expertise, attention to detail, and deep compassion, they ensure that people remain the focus of every study. These nurses work across a wide spectrum of specialties from cancer and kidney disease to mental health and infectious diseases supporting patients during some of the most vulnerable times in their health journey.
Across Sydney Local Health District, clinical trials and research nurses walk alongside patients through every step of their research journey.
The video below highlights the essential contributions of clinical trial nurses, told through the voices of patients and researchers. It is a powerful reminder that research and care are not separate – they are part of the same path toward better health for all.
