Coming Together, Building Together Aboriginal Artwork
Sydney Local Health District Artwork: Coming Together, Building Together by Artist Lee Hampton

The artwork is split up into nine different lands. Each land has a different landscape. The orange sections represent a more arid dry landscape, the areas within the line work, more mountainous, the darker blue dotted background wetlands and the lighter coloured blue green backgrounds more lush with vegetation. Each area is occupied by different tribes, that have all had to become innovative to navigate and survive on their land. These practices are developed over thousands of years to perfection, in order to become sustainable to their living conditions.

The journey lines that connect each meeting place represent connection and also collaboration between tribes, as they use these tracks as trade routes.

Innovation also has come at some point in order to cross the rivers to meet new tribes and trade with other lands. How would they cross the rivers?

By building canoes. This brings both ideas and innovations together.

The river also has many rivers connected to each other, this again brings in the connection element.

Dream Big for the Future… as the river starts from left to right branching out across the artwork, it symbolises growth and yearning to dream big. The fact that these tribal entities are crossing great distances and connecting to other mobs, trading skills and produce, shows a want for growing community, which in turn sees them dream big for the future.

In modern day health, these five elements are incorporated to provide the residents of Sydney the best quality care and support. Innovation is required to provide the best quality care and to address ongoing health challenges to the residents of Sydney. It requires specialists to be innovative in order to tackle ongoing health issues that arise, including the development of vaccines to tackle diseases/viruses and modern health practices needed to prolong life and address mental health. This often requires collaboration between specialists and other health professionals.

Connection to community and other members of the medical fraternity is vital to gain trust from community members to provide the best quality healthcare to our society.

Ideas are where all solutions to problems begin. Every single treatment, whether it be mental or medical, has come from a single idea, then developed into something real, that can be used to help treat our community members.

Dream Big for the Future… I believe without the drive to dream big, we would never have solutions to any problems, both medical and social. This is an absolute necessity for our health professionals to become innovative, collaborative and to develop connections and ideas that make our health system so successful.
