Student Nursing Orientation

All nursing students undertaking a clinical placement within a Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) facility must review the information below before commencing placement.

You will receive an email approximately 3 weeks prior to placement outlining key requirements for your first day.

If you complete additional placements within SLHD, you must review the first‑day requirements for each individual facility, as expectations may differ.

Placement expectations

First day arrival

  • If Sydney Education is organising your placement, meet your clinical facilitator in the hospital or clinic foyer (8:00 am for morning shifts and 1:30 pm for afternoon shifts).
  • If your education provider is organising your placement go directly to your allocated unit.
  • If you are unsure who is organising your placement, contact your education provider.

Unit information

  • Unit profiles are provided to education providers by the SLHD Clinical Placement Unit and are available via ClinConnect.
  • If you have not received your unit profile, contact your education provider before placement begins.

Facility exceptions

  • Some facilities (e.g. Mental Health services) have additional requirements such as:
    • Security key access or deposits
    • Mandatory morning attendance on first and/or last day
  • Refer to the 'Facility Summary' document provided by Sydney Education for site-specific instructions.

Mandatory eLearning (My Health Learning)

Completion of eLearning modules via My Health Learning (MHL) is required before your first day of placement.

These MHL modules form part of the mandatory orientation for all NSW Health staff and all nursing students enrolled in health-related courses in NSW Health facilities and support safe, compliant clinical practice.

Note: both staff and students must complete a further two modules every year.

Access periods

  • Access opens 13 days before placement commencement
  • Access closes after placement concludes
  • Modules reopen 13 days prior to each subsequent placement
  • Access cannot be granted outside these timeframes

For guidance and troubleshooting, please see the Mandatory training webpage.

Electronic Medical Record (eMR) access

All nursing students must have active eMR access from their first day of placement.

eMR access is essential for participation in clinical care. Students without access:

  • Cannot safely function in the clinical environment
  • May be sent home at the discretion of the Nursing Unit Manager

How to apply for eMR access

  1. Log in to My Health Learning. You would have received an auto-generated email from eHealth advising you when access to MHL is open.
  2. Complete the module ‘Overview of the eMR for Nursing Students’. To find this module, you can search the course code 182216601.
  3. Once completed, download, fill out and submit your eMR application to your education provider at least 10 days before placement.
  4. Your education provider will submit the application on your behalf to the SLHD Clinical Placement Unit.
  5. Once eMR access has been established, log in details will be returned to your education provider and forwarded to you.

If you have any troubles, learn more on the SLHD eMR Access Guide webpage.
