Team Development Service
Our Team Development Service works across Sydney Local Health District to enhance team health and performance.
What is Involved?
A Consultant from our Sydney Education Team Development Service will reach out to both the referrer and the manager/leader of the leadership team to understand the team’s goals and identify any current challenges. To help us determine the best way to support the team, we will also gather information from members within the team. We will then review the findings and propose a suite of offerings (validated and evidence-based interventions) for the team to utilise.
Our consultants are Clinical Psychologists with experience working in NSW Health. They are committed to delivering support that is both collaborative and evidence-based.
Why Focus on Healthy Teams?
The highly complex, dynamic and specialised nature of healthcare makes teams essential for delivering effective care. By nurturing and developing healthy teams, we can increase job satisfaction and decrease burnout. Effective teams make higher-quality decisions, manage complex tasks more efficiently and enhance the coordination of their expertise and actions. In healthcare, effective teamwork is linked to the provision of safe, high-quality care.

Frequently Asked Questions
On average, the team development initiatives will be completed over a 12 week period. However, this is dependent on the team’s needs and the intervention required. There are times when shorter interventions are sufficient (for example a one-off conversation with a manager or leader). Other times more in-depth interventions will be required. Timeframes will be discussed with the team during the assessment period.
The types of interventions we use are driven by the information gathered during the first phase of team development. Some of the interventions include training and education, linkage and referral to other services (such as coaching or supervision), and ongoing supportive consultation with managers or leaders. The interventions utilised are based on empirically validated models of teamwork.
The Team Development Service will work with the leadership team to support them to drive the identified strategies and/or initiatives. This is a highly collaborative process. The Team Development Service is a time-limited intervention – it is important that the leadership team actively engages in order for the initiatives to continue beyond the support provided.
The Team Development Service will generally conduct a “check in” about three months following any support provided. This “check in” will depend on the work initially undertaken with the team – it may include follow up measures or additional recommendations. The leadership team then assumes responsibility for sustaining any positive changes into the future.
Confidentiality is discussed transparently at each stage of the team development process. Trust is essential to the process – every effort is made to maintain confidentiality when possible and to be explicit about any limits to confidentiality.
