About this course
This workshop is specifically designed for community staff who work in high-risk environments. The blended learning program builds on content covered in the pre-requisite online module and aims to equip you with the essential knowledge and skills to prevent, manage and respond effectively to difficult, challenging and/or violent behaviours in the workplace.
In this workshop you will practice a range of evasive self-defence techniques to increase staff safety and advance your communication and de-escalation skills.
Who should attend?
This workshop is for community health staff who respond to security and duress response or those who work in locations where a local risk assessment has determined there is a potential for violence to occur.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Apply de-escalation and breakaway techniques as a form of violence prevention and minimisation
- Describe the importance of self, environment, and others in relation to violence prevention and management
- Apply a risk assessment approach to preventing and responding to workplace violence
- Identify the role of verbal and non-verbal communication in the prevention and management of violent behaviour
- Use de-escalation skills to effectively manage violent behaviour as it occurs in the workplace
- Identify and select appropriate response options when confronted with violent individuals
- Use evasive techniques to maintain personal safety when responding to a violent person
- Implement local workplace policies and procedures regarding the prevention and management of workplace violence.
