About this course

This course provides you with the knowledge and practical skills to competently perform sterile speculum examination for pregnant women at term, or as part of postnatal cervical screening.

To be accredited in speculum examination, you must complete this course and the course workbook which includes supervised speculum examinations in the workplace.

Accreditation in speculum examination ensures you have the skills and knowledge to provide high quality midwifery care to women.

Completion of this course supports you to practice to the full midwifery scope of practice and promotes continuity of care for the woman.

What will you learn?

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Identify indications and contraindications for speculum examination by midwives.
  2. Recognise issues for history taking, management and referrals in relation to women disclosing child sexual assault, sexual abuse, domestic violence or female genital mutilation / cutting.
  3. Apply strategies (environment, language and exam technique) to meet individual needs and facilitate women-centred care with privacy, dignity and respect.
  4. Demonstrate speculum insertion and removal techniques to minimise discomfort and optimise visualisation while complying with infection control protocols.
  5. Recognise when to refer to a medical officer and how to document findings.
