About this course

This three-day course aims to expand the clinical and psychological knowledge and skill in assessing, supporting and managing behavioural changes manifested by the ageing process. The course also explores behavioural changes associated with the instance of elder abuse and mental illness in the older person, and related referral pathways and services for support.

Who should attend?

All nursing staff and allied health professionals who provide care and advice to patient, families and carers.

What will you learn?

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Relate deterioration of each lobe of the brain to a change in cognitive function and associated behaviours.
  2. Recognise the barriers to assessing the older person and develop and implement strategies to achieve goals.
  3. Recognise clinical signs of polypharmacy and actively engage in patient/carer education re safe use of medication and behavioural modifying medication regimes.
  4. Identify clients at risk of wandering and implement risk management.
  5. Identify and evaluate clinical risks associated with delirium, dementia and depression, and develop and implement management plans.
  6. Differentiate between dementia and mental illness in relation to inpatient and community management.
  7. Identify indicators of elder abuse and appropriate referral reporting pathway.
  8. Identify and discuss the referral criteria for varied ranges of community services available from local/state/federal government programs for aged care clients.
