About this course
This course provides participants with evidence-based theoretical knowledge and practical skills to competently perform perineal infiltration and repair of first and second degree tears and episiotomies, without major extensions.
To be accredited in perineal infiltration and repair, you must complete this course and the course workbook which includes documentation of witnessed and performed real life perineal infiltration and repairs.
Accreditation in this advanced midwifery skill ensures you have the skills and knowledge to provide high quality midwifery care to women, reducing unnecessary involvement of non-midwifery staff. Completion of this course supports you to practice to the full midwifery scope of practice and promotes continuity of care for the woman.

By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Recognise factors that assist with the prevention of perineal trauma in childbirth
- Identify the anatomy involved and categorise the degrees of perineal trauma
- Demonstrate an understanding of perineal infiltration, repair techniques and the different uses and properties of local anaesthetics and suture materials
- Demonstrate proficiency in handling instruments, knot tying and suturing methods
- Apply infection control principles during perineal infiltration and repair.
