About this course
This course equips you with the annual face to face training requirements for Perinatal Safety Education. It consists of three hours of fetal safety and three hours of maternal safety.
This course includes cardiotocography case studies and various obstetric emergencies. The content of this course complements the online Maternal and Fetal Safety Education and quizzes which are all part of the NSW Health Deteriorating Patient Education program.
Completion of this course ensures you have the knowledge and skills to assess, detect, escalate and manage clinical deterioration in maternal, fetal and newborn conditions while working in a collaborative team.

Registered midwives and obstetric medical officers.
What will you learn?
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Apply a systematic approach to ensure that a comprehensive assessment is conducted
- Identify risk factors and associated physiological responses that may impact on maternal or fetal wellbeing
- Recognise, interpret, evaluate, and respond to the early and late warning signs of fetal or maternal deterioration
- Utilise algorithms to guide care planning, initial management, appropriate escalation when fetal of maternal deterioration is identified or suspected
- Discuss local Clinical Escalation Response System, processes in place for facilitating a second clinician review, and the importance of effective communication.
