About this course
The aim of this course is for you to acquire knowledge and skills in venepuncture and peripheral venous cannulation. This will ensure we maintain quality patient care and prevent any delays in patient blood investigations and administration of prescribed intravenous medications or fluids.
To be accredited to perform venepuncture and cannulation, staff must be deemed competent by an approved assessor. Attendance at this workshop is a pre-requisite for accreditation and does not reflect competence in either skill.
Who should attend?
This course is appropriate for any staff member who needs to perform venepuncture or cannulation as part of their role in Sydney Local Health District. This includes Medicine, Allied Health and Nursing staff registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
What will you learn?
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Apply the Sydney Local Health District policy and procedures relating to venepuncture and peripheral venous cannulation
- Adhere to infection control policy and standard precautions when accessing peripheral veins for venepuncture and cannulation
- Demonstrate competency in the performance of venepuncture using the vacutainer system and peripheral venous cannulation using safety cannula
- Identify and comprehend the potential complications related to venepuncture and peripheral venous cannulation.
