About this course

This program has been developed to assist nursing and medical staff working in Sydney Local Health District to recognise seriously ill infants and children. 

It aims to provide you with knowledge on how to recognise a seriously ill or injured child and manage the treatment of the child using a structured approach based on current best practice guidelines. 

The course is a compulsory component of the Transition to Emergency Nursing Program.

Who should attend?

This course is appropriate for registered nurses, enrolled nurses and junior medical officers who work in emergency departments.

What will you learn?

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Describe basic life support for the infant, child and older child and prioritise care within best practice guidelines
  2. Outline and Identify signs and symptoms of the deteriorating infant or child
  3. Differentiate anatomy and physiology of adults and children and outline appropriate care for specific populations
  4. Develop strategies for the initial management of the seriously ill or critically injured child
  5. Perform a rapid core assessment of airway, breathing, circulatory and neurological function in the seriously ill or injured child
