About this course
To provide emergency department nurses an opportunity to gain advanced emergency clinical skills. The knowledge to initiate care for patients waiting to be seen by a medical officer and the skills to implement definitive management of patients using the Clinical Initiative Nurse Protocols.
The course involves face to face lectures, case studies, clinical simulation and interactive workshops.

What will you learn?
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an advanced level of clinical competency in the care of patients outlined in the NSW Health Clinical Initiative Nurse role using theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement
- Assess patients on presentation to the emergency department as outlined in the NSW Health Clinical Initiative Nurse role and independently initiate investigations based on this assessment effectively
- Utilise advanced skills in emergency nursing including advanced assessment skills; initiation of x-rays, investigations & analgesia based on these assessment skills; and implement patient care using advanced clinical skills such as wound closure techniques, fracture management and invasive procedures (for example arterial blood sampling)
- Determine, prioritise, and justify clinical decisions using best practice as described in the Advanced Emergency Practice Program
- Demonstrate collaborative practice as a member of a multidisciplinary team, together with an ability to work within scope of practice in the advanced emergency role
