The Neuropathology Department at RPA offers highly specialised, best practice diagnostic neuropathology expertise to clinicians and researchers on a wide variety of neurosurgical and forensic neurological specimens.
The Department is closely affiliated with the University of Sydney and is located at the Brain and Mind Centre, Level 7, 94 Mallett Street, Camperdown.
The Neuropathology Department operates state-of-the-art laboratories and imaging facilities to support clinicians and researchers at RPA, across Australia and around the world.
The Departments main roles include:
- Providing a tissue-based diagnostic service for RPA and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse
- Offering a second opinion for pathologists with complex cases in Australia and across the globe
- Providing tissue and molecular testing for brain tumours
- Running the NSW state referral laboratory for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) diagnosis
- Processing and analysing nerve and muscle biopsy samples
- Acting as a reference laboratory for brain tumour clinical trials
- Delivering specialised forensic neuropathology services to all forensic centres in NSW
- Training pathology advanced trainees, research students and teaching medical students at the University of Sydney
The Department also runs the Australian Sports Brain Bank, Australian Veterans Brain Bank, MS Research Australia Brain Bank, the Neurological Brain Bank and the Sydney Brain Tumour Bank.
