Our hospitals
The hospitals within the RPA BPT Network provide trainees with comprehensive clinical experience. Each hospital offers distinct opportunities to build core and specialty skills in varied healthcare settings.
The hospitals in our network are:
Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital
RPA Hospital is a major quaternary and tertiary referral and teaching hospital in Sydney, known for its pioneering healthcare and broad impact locally and internationally. It offers Basic Physician Trainees extensive clinical experience across a wide range of specialties, including cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, infectious diseases, immunology, endocrinology, and more. Unique opportunities include exposure to liver and renal transplantation, CAR-T and bone marrow transplantation, ECR, ECMO, cystic fibrosis and more. Trainees also benefit from medical oncology rotations at the state-of-the-art Chris O'Brien Lifehouse cancer centre. Furthermore, RPA offers trainees vast teaching and research opportunities with its close affiliation with numerous research institutes and the University of Sydney; RPA researchers contribute to over 1300 peer-reviewed publications annually and there are currently more than 400 active clinical trials at RPA.
Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital
Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital is a metropolitan teaching hospital in southwestern Sydney, serving a diverse and multicultural community. Affiliated with the University of NSW, it provides Basic Physician Trainees with a valuable clinical experience distinct from RPAH. The hospital offers a dedicated training program tailored to each stage of training and includes rotations in a broad range of specialties such as cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology and more.
Balmain Hospital
Balmain Hospital, located 10 minutes from RPA Hospital, is a community-focused facility specialising in aged care, rehabilitation, and general medicine. It features a unique General Practice Casualty run with local doctors. The hospital receives most inpatients from RPA Hospital and maintains strong clinical ties. Basic Physician Trainees on secondment gain valuable experience in geriatric and rehabilitation medicine, making Balmain a key part of the training program.
Dubbo Base Hospital
Located 5 hours west of Sydney, Dubbo Base Hospital is a major regional teaching hospital of the University of Sydney, providing an outstanding exposure to general medicine and specialist care in a rural context. Basic Physician Trainees rotate through formal general medicine, cardiology and nephrology rotations, but also have access to specialist clinicians and ambulatory medicine in the fields of gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, rheumatology, oncology and neurology.
Bathurst Base Hospital
Located 3 hours west of Sydney, Bathurst Base Hospital is a major regional teaching hospital of Western Sydney University. It is a shared secondment site with the Nepean BPT Network and trainees from both networks are provided a rich exposure to general medicine in both inpatient and outpatient settings. With general physicians who are trained in cardiology, nephrology and gastroenterology sub-specialties, trainees have a wide variety of learning opportunities in both general and subspecialty medicine in a rural setting.
Alice Springs Hospital
The RPA BPT Network is privileged to have a 'remote' rural attachment at Alice Springs Hospital. Whilst a major regional hospital, it provides access to a unique caseload and patient population and thus provides opportunities for learning that few Basic Physician Training programs can provide. In addition, Alice Springs Hospital offers a distinctive cultural experience to complement the exceptional clinical exposure and training.
