As a premier Australian centre for health and medical research, RPA has a long history of implementing research findings to provide excellent patient care.

The Institute promotes the philosophy of learning and discovery that RPA is recognised for nationally and internationally.

The Institute of Academic Medicine was established in 2023. It is located at the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator Innovation Hub in Gloucester House, RPA Hospital.

Vision

To improve patient care and clinical outcomes through the promotion and support of education and research within the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Division of Medicine.

Principles

The following principles guide the work of the Institute:

Excellence in clinical care Providing high-quality patient care through the integration of research, education and clinical practice.
Collegiality Supporting collaborative research and education through a multispecialty and multidisciplinary framework, within and beyond the RPA Division of Medicine.
Innovation Conducting and supporting research development and forming relationships to pursue and strengthen advances in medical research and commercialisation at RPA - drawing on the research and clinical strengths of RPA Hospital. 
Community engagement and partnership Engaging with communities served by RPA to ensure that the research and education programs of the Institute reflect local priorities and needs. 
Diversity Promoting diversity in leadership positions, research focus areas and career pathways for RPA physicians and physician trainees.

Our Team

Our partners

The University of Sydney We work closely with the Central Clinical School to promote our Research Education Program and streamline research process for clinical researchers.
The RPA Division of Medicine We report to the Head of the RPA Division of Medicine and disseminate our ideas through the division network.
NSW Health Pathology We have an appointed Research Lead for Tissue Pathology.
Institute for Musculoskeletal Health

The Institute for Musculoskeletal Health (IMH) is a multidisciplinary research partnership in musculoskeletal health and physical activity which brings together researchers, expert clinicians, patients and community groups to conduct high-quality research in real world settings. 

We work with IMH to provide guidance for grant applications and research education through workshops, events and research competitions. IMH Director Professor Chris Maher sits on the IAM Advisory Council and Dr Bethan Richards and Professor Youssef are IAM research leads.
