National Poisons Register
The National Poisons Register does not provide advice to members of the public in relation to poisoning or exposure incidents.
If you are seeking information or require advice following a suspected poisoning or exposure, please contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26. This is a free and confidential service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week across Australia.
If someone has collapsed or is not breathing, call 000 immediately.
The Australian National Poisons Register (NPR) is a national database containing information on the formulations and physicochemical properties of more than 140,000 proprietary products. The NPR primarily collects information on non-medicinal products, including industrial and household chemicals, veterinary products, cosmetics, pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers.
It is accessed by authorised users across Poisons Information Centres, hospitals, clinical toxicology services and other specialised services to support the management of poisoning exposures and national toxicovigilance activities.
The NPR works with manufacturers, importers and distributors to produce and maintain a sustainable, comprehensive, high quality information source that informs risk assessment and medical management following human exposure to commercial products supplied in Australia.
The service operates within Sydney Local Health District.
Submit to the register
Submission of detailed information for relevant products is an established expectation to support the completeness, quality and ongoing development of the register. This includes products intended for domestic, commercial and industrial use, such as:
- household chemicals
- cleaning products
- pesticides
- industrial formulations and other non-pharmaceutical products.
When submitting product information to NPR, please include the following:
- Product name(s), including any variants
- Manufacturer, importer or distributor details
- Safety Data Sheet(s)* (see note below)
- Product label artwork
- Formulation or composition details
- Relevant physicochemical properties. As a minimum, the following should be provided:
- Individual ingredient concentrations and CAS numbers
- pH of the neat product if a liquid, or an aqueous solution of the product if a solid or powder
- Viscosity
- Form
- Odour
- Colour
- Retail pack presentation and size including mass or volume of dose forms where applicable
- Information relating to changes in formulation, labelling or classification (for updated products)
- Any additional supporting documentation relevant to product identification or composition
Additional information may be requested where required to ensure records are complete and suitable for inclusion.
All information received is reviewed to ensure it meets required standards, and further detail may be sought where necessary.
Submissions are made via email to npr@health.nsw.gov.au.
*Safety Data Sheets (SDS), product labels and supporting documentation should be provided for new and updated products. Industry is expected to provide this information as it becomes available, including where there are changes to product formulation, labelling or classification, to support the timely inclusion and ongoing maintenance of accurate records.
The information held within the NPR supports the assessment and management of patient's exposure to commercial and industrial products and contributes to national toxicovigilance activities. To ensure records meet these requirements, additional information beyond standard SDS content may be requested, including material provided in confidence. All information is managed securely and is not publicly available.
