Urology

The Urology Department at Canterbury Hospital provides care for adults with urological conditions. This includes cancers of the bladder, kidney and prostate, prostate enlargement, kidney stones and other general urology conditions.

Our care is evidence based and focused on timely access to assessment and treatment.

The department has supported the local community for more than 20 years. We manage both elective and emergency urological conditions.

We work closely with other hospital teams, including emergency, medical, intensive care and allied health services. This team-based approach supports safe, coordinated and timely care for patients.

Leading urological care

We use modern imaging and endoscopic technology to deliver minimally invasive treatments where appropriate, including laser surgery for kidney stones and enlarged prostate conditions.

Through streamlined surgical pathways, we have reduced waiting times to within 30 days of referral for patients with kidney stones who are symptomatic or have ureteric stents.

In partnership with Concord Hospital, robotic surgery is available for select urological conditions.

Referrals and clinical advice

Canterbury Hospital does not currently operate a public urology outpatient clinic.

Routine referrals can be made by a GP to their preferred urologist from Canterbury Hospital.

GPs who are seeking urology advice or considering referral to the Emergency Department are encouraged to contact the Urology Registrar in advance, where possible.

Contact the Urology Registrar via the Canterbury Hospital switchboard on (02) 9153 2000.

Research

The department is involved in clinical research focused on improving the safety, comfort and effectiveness of urological care, including the use of emerging technologies and devices in the treatment of kidney stone and ureteric conditions.
