About this course

This two-day course offers an opportunity to apply your knowledge of immunology, microbiology and epidemiology to develop measures for preventing and controlling transmissible diseases and infections in a healthcare setting.

Who should attend?

Registered nurses and midwives, enrolled nurses and allied health professionals in Sydney Local Health District with responsibilities as infection prevention and control leads in clinical practice.

What will you learn?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply the knowledge of microbiology and immunology to prevent and control infection
  2. Discuss the interaction between the host and microorganisms
  3. Recognise the infection process using the chain of infection model
  4. Describe evidence-based infection prevention and control principles and other resources available for healthcare staff
  5. Recognise the infection prevention and control systems and public health
  6. Discuss the significance of infectious diseases and healthcare-associated infections
  7. Apply standard and transmission-based precautions
  8. Recognise vaccination and vaccine-preventable diseases
  9. Explain strategies for the prevention and management of sharp injuries and exposures.
