District welcomes new clinical staff
Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals join teams across the District
Sydney Local Health District is welcoming a new intake of health professionals in 2026, with doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health staff joining teams across the District to support patient care and services.
A total of 106 junior medical officers have commenced across the District, with 52 based at Concord Hospital and Canterbury Hospital, and 54 at Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital. Following orientation, the interns have begun working with clinical teams and will rotate through specialties including surgery, medicine and emergency medicine as part of their supervised training.
Dr Yoh Ghen Tee, who has begun his first rotation in urology and general surgery at Canterbury Hospital, said the transition into internship had been exciting and reassuring.
“It’s definitely nerve-racking but I’m really excited. Everyone has been incredibly supportive, and the training and guidance so far have been very helpful,” Dr Tee said.
The District is also welcoming 332 GradStart-registered nurses in 2026. The first intake of 150 graduate nurses started on Monday 9 February, with further intakes scheduled for Monday 9 March and Monday 4 May.
Darcie O’Connell and Sego Randoulet are part of the GradStart intake of registered nurses and will be starting their first rotation on the Colorectal Wards at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Darcie said joining Sydney Local Health District was an exciting step in her career.
“There’s a strong culture of support across the team, which has made the transition feel less daunting. I’m really looking forward to starting on the wards,” she said.
In addition, 13 GradStart midwives began in late January, supporting maternity services across the District.
Allied Health services are also welcoming 37 new starters joining across six professions, including social work, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, pharmacy, nutrition and dietetics, and speech pathology. These clinicians will be based across RPA, Concord, Canterbury and Croydon Health Centre, as well as Forest Lodge Community Health.
Elizabeth Orr is among the new Allied Health graduates joining the District, returning to Sydney Local Health District as a social worker after previously working with the District as an administration officer earlier in her career.
“Seeing the teamwork across services, the outcomes achieved for patients, and the genuine support for staff made me want to start my social work career at Sydney Local Health District,” she said.
District Chief Executive Deb Willcox AM said the new intake reflected the District’s continuing commitment to building a skilled and supported workforce.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome so many new staff to the District in 2026. Whether staff are starting their first role or continuing their professional journey, they are joining teams committed to learning, collaboration and delivering high-quality care for the community,” she said.
“We wish all our new starters a positive and rewarding beginning to their careers with Sydney Local Health District.”
