Professor David Le Couteur inducted into the Academy of Geroscience.
 

Professor David Le Couteur AO, Senior Staff Geriatrician at Concord Hospital, has been inducted into the prestigious Academy of Geroscience in recognition of his internationally respected research into the biology of ageing and age-related disease.

Professor Le Couteur is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Level 3 Leadership Fellow at the ANZAC Research Institute.

The Academy brings together leading scientists, clinicians and researchers from around the world dedicated to understanding the biological processes of ageing and improving health, independence and quality of life for older people.

Professor Le Couteur said his research has always been motivated by a desire to improve the lives of older Australians.

“Older people often experience many illnesses, disability and prolonged recovery from disease,” he said.

“I’m interested in understanding what it is about ageing itself that contributes to these problems and what we can do to help people remain healthier for longer and continue enjoying their lives.”

His research spans translational gerontology, including nutrition, liver physiology and pharmacology, ageing biology, geriatric medicine and the safe use of medicines in older people. His work has also contributed to advancing understanding of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Professor Le Couteur joins a select group of Australian scientists in the Academy, including Harvard Medical School academic Professor David Sinclair AO and 2009 Nobel Laureate Professor Elizabeth Blackburn.
