Celebrating the contribution of palliative care volunteers
Volunteers recognised for supporting patients and carers
Sydney Local Health District’s Specialist Palliative Care volunteers were recognised at a special Volunteer Appreciation Morning Tea held at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on Friday 15 May.
The event brought together volunteers, staff and District leaders to acknowledge the important role volunteers play in supporting patients, carers and families living with a life-limiting illness.
The SLHD Specialist Palliative Care Volunteer Program has operated for more than 16 years and supports patients and families across hospital and community settings. Volunteers provide companionship, emotional support and respite, helping create comfort and connection during challenging times.
“In most parts of the world, palliative care isn’t delivered by trained healthcare professionals. It is by families, loved ones and volunteers,” Dr Anthoulla Mohamudally, Head of Department, Palliative Care at RPA said.
“So, we really do appreciate the critical role that you play here at RPA and in the District.”
District Chief Executive Deb Willcox AM reflected on the lasting impact of simple acts of kindness in healthcare.
“The things that people remember about their time in hospital are very rarely about the clever equipment or the clever test,” Deb said.
“It’s usually about a really simple moment – a hand being held, a kind conversation, someone being present during a difficult time. Never underestimate the impact that you have.”
The Specialist Palliative Care Volunteer Program continues to expand across hospital and community settings, with future opportunities including fundraising and community support volunteer roles to help strengthen services and support for patients and families.
