As he begins his third year at Concord Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Registered Nurse Sinosh Sebastian says he is grateful for the support and connection he has received since migrating to Australia.

“These past two years have been an amazing journey. I have had the privilege of working with a wonderful team,” Sinosh said.

Sinosh started his nursing career in India, where he stayed for three years. His nursing career took him to the Middle East for 11 years and Ireland for another three years before he moved to Sydney with his wife and three boys.

After living and working in three unique countries, the difference Sydney Local Health District has made for him has been remarkable.

“There is a much better culture and people here, especially at Concord. I am very happy to be continuing my work here at Concord ICU,” he said.

Sinosh was able to undertake continuing education through District learning opportunities, encouraging his keen interest in studying and enriching his professional and personal growth.

He completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and a Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Critical Care Nursing), a course run in partnership between Sydney Education and the University of Tasmania. He is now enrolled in the master’s degree Advanced Nursing (Critical Care Nursing), following the Graduate Diploma.

“I’ve added three new courses in the two years at ICU – that is not something I was able to do before,” he said.

Alongside his clinical practice, Sinosh is working on a quality improvement initiative for the ward, streamlining care plans and keeping consistency of records to maintain a high level of continuity of care.

He is also working towards becoming a Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) with support from Rosina Wan, Nursing Unit Manager.

“Sinosh is really good at teaching, he is patient and kind and knowledgeable,” Rosina said.

“He is education focused and a good reflection of the nursing recruits we have received through the District recruitment process.”

Through the next stage he will be shadowing others in the ward and taking secondment opportunities to cover other CNE’s.

District mentorship and training have helped Sinosh thrive in his new home country.

“I would like to thank Dr. Mark Kol, Unit Director, Rosina, Alison, Ying, Michael, and many others – whose encouragement and guidance have been invaluable,” he said.

“I look forward to many more years of learning and contributing to the team."
