Balmain Hospital Marks X-Ray Upgrade
The upgrade will support more timely diagnosis and care for patients closer to home.
Balmain Hospital has marked a significant upgrade to its radiology services, with the commissioning of a new digital X-ray machine and the refurbishment of its Radiology Department.
The new system replaces a non-digital unit, delivering improved image quality, faster data acquisition and greater diagnostic accuracy for patients.
General Manager Grace Scott said the upgrade will improve care for the local community.
“A high-quality digital X-ray at Balmain Hospital provides an important service to our General Practice Casualty patients and prevents unnecessary transfers,” she said.
X-ray imaging has been part of Balmain Hospital’s services for more than a century, with the first unit installed in 1912. In recent decades, the service has been supported through a long-standing partnership with Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA).
“Over the years, a wonderful partnership in delivering imaging care to patients being treated at Balmain Hospital has developed,” said Dr Kirby Wong, Co-head of RPA’s Department of Radiology.
“After 25 years of faithful service, the previous non-digital, film-printed X-ray unit has been decommissioned … we are now able to provide a new digital X-ray unit fit for the 21st century.”
The upgrade was made possible through funding from RPA Radiology, Sydney Local Health District trust funds and community contributions, alongside the efforts of the District’s clinical, engineering and operational teams.
