Balmain Hospital has celebrated 140 years since opening its doors in 1885 as the modest Balmain Cottage Hospital. From its humble origins – just four rooms and 39 patients treated in its inaugural year – it has grown and evolved, adapting to the changing needs of the local neighbourhood.

The hospital hosted a celebratory ball on Friday 12 September with more than 150 guests, including District Board members Adjunct Professor Mary Haines and Richard Acheson, the District’s Chief Executive, Deb Willcox AM, the Balmain MP, Kobi Shetty and Mayor Darcy Byrne from Inner West Council, staff members old and new and other members of the local community. The evening began with a video message from the Minister for Health, the Hon. Ryan Park MP.

The celebrations continued last Tuesday, when Deb Willcox and NSW Health Secretary Susan Pearce AM joined staff for a barbecue and the presentation of staff recognition awards including for service up to 60 years.

Nurse Unit Manager of GP Casualty, Vanessa Bregolin was also announced as the winner of the Balmain Hospital Employee Excellence award for quarter three of 2025.

On Thursday, the hospital held a Research Symposium, which featured several presentations highlighting some key areas of research being undertaken at Balmain including presentations on District’s dementia framework, severe pressure injuries and general practice casualty digital enhancement – tracking list.

“Balmain Hospital’s longevity is a testament to its adaptability and community focus,” said General Manager Grace Scott. “We are proud to celebrate 140 years but, more importantly, we are excited for the next chapter. Whether through advanced rehabilitation services or sustainable initiatives, we remain dedicated to enhancing care and wellbeing for every person who walks through our doors.”

Now, 140 years later, Balmain Hospital remains a deeply valued institution – embracing aged care, rehabilitation, general practice, and outpatient services, all while upholding its heritage and spirit of community care.

Chief Executive Deb Willcox AM said the community’s appreciation for Balmain Hospital was inspired by its rich history and the people who have worked there from its founding to the present day.

“This milestone is a tribute to the enduring spirit of our staff and the resilience of our community,” she said. “For 140 years, Balmain Hospital has not just stood here, it has been there for generations of local families, with so many locals holding their own personal memories of the hospital.

“From its four‑room beginnings to today’s comprehensive care, our commitment remains the same: to serve with compassion, quality, and local heart.”
