125 years of Sydney District Nursing
Milestone anniversary recognises the enduring role of district nurses in delivering compassionate community care
Sydney District Nursing has celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking more than a century of compassionate, community-based care across the Sydney Local Health District.
Guests gathered for a cocktail event at Canterbury Leagues Club to acknowledge the milestone and recognise the vital contribution District nurses have made since 1900. A commemorative booklet was launched on the night, charting the service’s evolution and key achievements over the decades.
When Royal Prince Alfred Hospital opened in 1882, it was founded on a commitment to equitable care. In just over a decade, district nurses began visiting homes to ensure that this care reached those unable to attend hospital, establishing a legacy that continues today.
While healthcare has advanced considerably, the essence of Sydney District Nursing remains rooted in human-focused, community-based support. Nurses build trusted relationships, notice early signs of deterioration, help patients remain independent and connected, and provide reassurance at some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
Today, the service continues to evolve through its integration with Sydney Virtual Hospital, expanding access to clinical support by combining virtual monitoring with in-home visits. Supported by new programs and purpose-built facilities, District nurses have continued to deliver uninterrupted care, including throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, helping keep patients safely supported in the community while reducing pressure on hospitals.
Sydney Local Health District Chief Executive Deb Willcox AM commended nurses past and present for their skill, persistence and connection to patients.
“While medicine and technology have advanced, it is still people that make our care exceptional. Sydney District Nursing epitomises that,” she said.
“Thank you to the nurses of today and the ones who came before you. You are continuing a legacy of excellence in nursing for over 125 years through your enduring care for our patients, families and community.”
The celebration acknowledged the generations of nurses whose dedication has shaped the service –and those continuing that work today.
Sydney District Nursing remains an essential part of hospital patient flow, supporting early discharge, easing pressure on emergency departments and improving patient experience in the community.
As the District looks to the future, the service continues to strengthen its commitment to equitable, compassionate care – delivered where people live, when they need it most.
