Nutrition and Healthy Eating

Our Diversity Programs and Strategy Hub team delivers culturally tailored nutrition group education sessions which aim to improve nutrition knowledge and behaviours among our diverse communities.

Healthy ageing education sessions

Older adults are at greater risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, and health conditions related to changes in muscle and bone mass, such as osteoporosis.

Good nutrition across the lifespan helps prevent chronic disease – it is never too late to make changes to support healthy aging.

The sessions are delivered by our bilingual/bicultural staff in various languages, including:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Vietnamese

Topics covered

  • General healthy eating information for older adults
  • Heart health including cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Bone health
  • Preventing muscle loss with age

Who is the program for?

It is for people aged 60 years and over who would like to learn more about how to eat well as they get older.

If you are a service provider that supports groups of older adults, contact our team at SLHD-DiversityHub@health.nsw.gov.au to organise a session.

Healthy children education sessions

The early years of life are a critical time for healthy growth and development. Starting healthy eating habits during this time continues into adulthood.

Children need a variety of highly nutritious foods to support their brain, muscle, and bone development.

The sessions are delivered by our bilingual and bicultural staff in various languages, including:

  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Mandarin
  • Urdu
  • Vietnamese

Topics covered

  • Foods children need to eat – ‘everyday’ and ‘sometimes’ foods
  • How to manage picky or fussy eating
  • Importance of iron
  • Children’s programs and services

Who is the program for?

It is for parents or carers who care for young children.

If you are a service provider that supports groups of children and families, contact our team at SLHD-DiversityHub@health.nsw.gov.au to organise a session.

Multilingual Children’s Book

Books and literature are a fun way for young children to learn concepts through ‘play’. Books that promote healthy eating and behaviours can deliver healthy eating messages.

Riding the Vegetable Horse is a picture e-book that you can read with your child. It is available in English and 6 different languages, including Arabic, Bangla, Burmese, Chinese (simplified), Nepali and Mongolian.
