Peter Beumont Unit
What to expect
The Peter Beumont Unit is a nine-bed unit providing specialised care for people with an eating disorder. We will provide you with holistic, recovery-oriented care to help you work towards recovery.
Our multidisciplinary team will work with you to understand your needs, preferences and goals. Our team includes mental health nurses, psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, registrars, occupational therapists and dietitians.
When you arrive, your physical health will be checked. This includes your blood pressure, temperature and heart health.
During your stay at the Unit, you will receive structure and support with mealtimes. You will learn strategies to manage unhelpful patterns, habits, distress and emotions. We will support your nutritional rehabilitation. You will be able to attend groups about eating in a normal and healthy way. We will help you plan your discharge so you can continue to get support in the community.
The Peter Beumont Unit can admit voluntary and involuntary patients.
Orientation
When you arrive, we will show you around the Unit and introduce you to your care team. There are some items that cannot be bought into the ward or kept in bedrooms. This includes food and drinks. We will explain all of this information as well as visiting and access to the building, fire safety and security.
What to bring
When you are coming to the Peter Beumont Unit we will have a pre-admission meeting with you and will talk about what to bring and what is not allowed. Items that are prohibited include alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, illicit drugs, tobacco, vapes, any food or drinks, over-the-counter medication or diet products, magazines, sharp or dangerous objects and weapons.
Please bring regular clothes and aim to dress for the weather. We will ask you to only wear tights under other clothes. We have a washing machine and dryer in the Unit.
